Description
Tytherington Road bridge is a single span overline bridge carrying an unclassified public road over a two track non electrified railway. It is located between Salisbury and Warminster Stations adjacent to the disused Heytesbury railway station.
The existing superstructure was constructed in 1896, and comprised of five riveted steel plate āIā girders spanned with brick jack arches with steel plate parapets. The bridge deck was supported on brickwork abutments with brickwork wingwalls. Deterioration of this structure, in particular the steelwork, led to the bridge having an imposed width restriction and a reduced weight limit of 3 tonnes.
Dyer & Butler was awarded the contract by Network Rail in May 2007 to reconstruct this bridge with a deck comprising precast concrete beams and an integral parapet and edge beam. The early award of the contract was necessary to enable sufficient lead-in times for construction of the precast beams and to arrange the 8 week road closure. This was planned to coincide with a 52 hr possession (prearranged by Network Rail) on the weekend of the 20th and 21st of October 2007. The road closure was utilised to prepare the site and structure so that in the company we could carry out the main works which included the demolition of the existing bridge deck and the installation of the new concrete bridge structure.
