Description
Sherborne Road Bridge (ELR - WEY at 137 miles 43 chains) is a single span overline bridge carrying a public road over a single track non electrified railway. The span between abutments is 9.82m. It is located between Yeovil and Castle Cary stations. The bridge was width restricted and weight restricted to 3 tonnes.
The original superstructure comprised seven riveted steel plate āIā girders with jack arches spanning between them and steel plate parapets. The scope of this project was to reconstruct Sherborne Road Bridge with a deck comprising precast concrete beams (shear connected together).
A 29 hr possession was booked for the reconstruction of the bridge, in January 2008.
The main elements of the works that were undertaken were;
Removal of the existing bridge deck and preparation of the abutments.
Installation of new concrete cills and bearing pads
Installation of new pre-cast concrete beams and parapets
Reinstatement of the road was completed with the road closure along with general repairs to the brick abutments.
The project was completed on time and within budget
